AUDITIONS – ART

29/03/2023 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

ART AUDITION NOTICE

Wednesday March 29 –  7pm – 1812 Theatre.

ART by Yasmina Reza

Directed by Justin Stephens

The 1812 Theatre is thrilled to announce auditions for the production of ART by Yasmina Reza, translated by Christopher Hampton. Reza is one of the most successful playwrights of our time, and her insightful, witty writing paired with Hampton’s exquisite translation make for a killer combination. The play ran for 8 years in London, winning an Olivier, and 600 performances on Broadway, winning a Tony.

ART will be directed by an experienced director known for high quality productions, including comedies such as BASKERVILLE, THE 39 STEPS, GOD OF CARNAGE and SIDEWAYS.  Drama credits include THE WOMAN IN BLACK, CONSTELLATIONS, and THE RISE AND FALL OF LITTLE VOICE.

At the heart of ART is a fundamental question of friendship, one that raises deep issues about truth, honesty, and human connection. The plot is simple,  Serge buys an apparently pure white canvas by a fashionable artist for an eyewatering sum. His close friend Marc thinks he’s insane. Yvan, their mutual friend, tries to mediate and they both turn on him. It’s a laugh-out-loud funny play.

We are seeking talented actors who are passionate about bringing this enduringly popular and thought-provoking play to life through the following roles:

SERGE: A divorced consultant dermatologist, enamoured by – and considers himself something of a connoisseur of – the contemporary world around him. Self-assured and charming, but capable of immense emotional cruelty.

MARC: An aeronautical engineer with a partner Paula, and in matters of taste, a conventional classicist. His taste in art is very different. Something of a cynic, with free-flowing candour. Tells it like it is.

YVAN: A salesman in a stationery firm, about to marry. He’s the peacemaker, introverted, fastidious, bordering on the neurotic, and stressed by the complications of his life, which threaten to derail him.

Please come prepared to read from the scene of your choice that showcases your comedic timing and ability to convey complex emotions.

Scenes we will cover:

Yvan’s monologue in Act 2, Scene 1, where he describes his frustration and confusion over his impending marriage.

Marc’s explosive rant in Act 1, Scene 1, where he passionately argues against Serge’s purchase of the painting.

Serge’s explanation of why he bought the painting in Act 1, Scene 2, where he attempts to justify his purchase to Marc.
